Planning for Success – It Takes More Than Luck to Succeed

If you know me, you know I am a copious note taker. At any given moment I have at least 4 notebooks, 2 planners, and a bazillion pens in my home office. In college, I would write out what I needed to remember three times to help study for exams. I don’t know what it is, but if I don’t write something down it goes in one ear and straight out the other. Long story short, I am old-school when it comes to planning for success and I don’t use my computer, phone or tablet. I prefer using colored markers to make my goals, to-do lists, and aspirations look all pretty!

First off, if you have not heard of Ashley Shelly’s planners you should stop reading right now and check them out by clicking here.

Here are a few key aspects to plan for success:

-        Planning is essential: Set aside a time at the end of the day to go over your lists, look at your calendar, and plan the priorities for the days ahead. On Sunday nights, I take a little extra time to look at the full week ahead: I set goals, reflect on the past week to identify room for improvement, and get my mind right.

-        Use a Daily Planner: I mentioned Ashley Shelly’s planner earlier - I am completely  obsessed! It is calming to plan the month ahead using a planner, more specifically the Ashley Shelly Planner. I mean, it covers everything! Even tackling stress elimination and conscientiously looking at roadblocks that may present themselves. Genius!

-        Last but not least, Setting goals! I keep my goals realistic. While it may be possible for some people to make a million dollars in a month, let’s be real, those people probably have someone to do their planning for them! In today’s new reality, it is more crucial than before to keep track of our days. I focus my goals to pertain to what I want to achieve professionally but it’s just as important to include non-professional goals like planting my raised garden (I need to get on that, time is a-ticking). Setting goals, big or small, gives you the ability to measure your efforts.
      •  If you can’t focus on an end goal, how do you know when you get there? How will you know how long it took to get there and see what could be done differently to achieve a similar goal?
All in all, planning is not always a hootin’ good time, but it is imperative to plan if you expect to achieve success.

Get those planners/notebooks out, use your colored pens/markers, document your plan and have fun with it!

I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes to get y’all motivated,

“Failing to plan is planning to fail.” – Alan Lakein

Fear of Rejection – Getting the Monkey Off Your Back

In 2009, I graduated college and started applying for a plethora of jobs. When I received my first rejection letter saying “Thank you for taking the time to interview for (insert job), we have decided to move forward with other candidates more suitable for the role…”. I was surprised, I honestly thought the interview went well, I was a little bummed. Trying to find a job wherever you are in your career is not an easy task. Nonetheless, instead of letting this rejection hold me back, kick me to the ground, or shatter my confidence, I tucked that rejection letter away and said to myself “I’ll show them!”. Not that I know where the letter is today, but the point is: have a positive mindset!  The fear of rejection is an unconscious blocker that has the ability to hold people back in their professional and personal lives equally. For instance, it might keep them from applying for the job they want because they don’t believe they have enough experience, or don’t speak up when t...
